The teams I follow and how I watch — why a 0-0 is sometimes the better game than a 4-3.

I watch football for structure, not for results.

A tightly organised 0-0 is a better watch than a 4-3 where both sides collapse. I know this is an unpopular position. Below are the teams I follow and why.

- Arsenal — I started watching in the late Wenger years, so my memory of this club is mostly made of disappointment. It makes the good parts weigh more.
- Athletic Bilbao — Basque players only. In modern football that is close to irrational, which is exactly why it deserves respect.
- Netherlands — Never won a World Cup, changed how everyone plays. I think they came out ahead on that trade.
- Japan — A case study in doing one thing for thirty years. Their youth structure is more instructive than their matches.
- Brighton — What I actually follow is their recruitment logic. The best example of winning inside a budget using data.
- Nottingham Forest — Started paying attention after reading a biography of Clough. The history is far more interesting than the present.
